Counting Stars_Reimaging the Beijing Ancient Observatory

This project is a speculative transformation of the Beijing Ancient Observatory Museum. Originally constructed in 1442 BC, the observatory had been actively in use for nearly 500 years, making it the most famous astronomical site in Chinese history. Nowadays, the observatory operates as an exhibition space in affiliation with the Beijing Planetarium, housing a rich collection of ancient astronomical observation instruments in the observatory tower, the exhibition halls and the ground floor garden.

My investigation into the historical development of the observatory led to the proposal of transforming the exhibition into a more approachable and engaging one. By reorganizing the exhibition route following a more concise narrative of the evolution of pre-telescopic astronomy, and implementing augmented reality technology into the spatial experience, this project aims to better popularize astronomical observation knowledge of ancient China.
